The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA affiliation. This instructor-led, 8-hour course will provide direct instruction from NRA-certified instructors from beginning to end and takes place in both a classroom and a range environment. The student will have an opportunity to qualify on the range.

Course topics include:

  • Gun safety rules

  • Proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols

  • Ammunition knowledge and selection

  • Pistol selection and storage

  • Shooting fundamentals

  • Pistol inspection and maintenance

  • Marksmanship

  • Shooting range safety.

**Additionally, students will complete live fire training while on the range with a NRA Certified Instructor and will shoot for qualification in a nationally standardized shooting course. (Range fees not included.)

All participants will receive:

  • NRA Guide: Basics of Pistol Shooting Handbook

  • NRA Gun Safety Rules card

  • NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program book

  • Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination

  • Course completion certificate (upon successful completion) bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructors.

All participants must bring:

  • Eye and Ear Protection

  • Pistol (semi-automatic or revolver)

  • 100 rounds (minimum) of ammunition (in the same caliber as the pistol you will be bringing)

  • If the student does not have a suitable firearm, one may be rented for an additional $20.
